Chapter Thirty-Three

Consequences

We managed to stay in the mess hall late into the evening, almost as late as Hunt had scheduled us to be studying. With that option available, and reports of overcrowding at the library, we figured that our usual table was as good a place to hunker down and study as any. For those last few millies of the evening, after they finally kicked us out of the mess hall but before everyone went back to the barracks and crashed, we would just walk around the track in the gym. While I was pretty sure that it wouldn't be enough to satisfy our PT requirement, Smith and Dot suggested that we tried it.

By the time that we got back to our room, Kenya and I were just way too tired to try doing anything together. It seemed like avoiding talking about the other night seemed to work just as well as talking about it. I knew that we'd need to address the elephant in the room, but while that wall still stood between us, neither of us seemed interested in trying. We both just went to bed, keeping to our own sides. Our own corners as it were. With the coursework of the new class starting up, and the strict studying schedule that Hunt and Porter were going to be keeping us on, we'd need to save working on our relationship for the weekends.

Still, we managed to stay civil with each other. Stay together to some degree. We were spending a lot of time together, usually heading between the room, the mess, and class together. We even did our PT together, though, as usual, Kenya would constantly lap me on the run around the track. As we came in for breakfast the next day, we kept together, heading into the line as a couple. Time together was how we became such close friends. It would be how we became ourselves again too.

"Hey, look, pancakes," Kenya said, pointing over at the stack over there. I had spotted them the moment we got there, but I still nodded towards her, smiling as if she had drawn my attention to them.

"They're not the same as Mom used to make," I said, trying to remain civil. Mom had made amazing pancakes, especially when she used to use her magic to make them extra tasty and zero calories. Still, I grabbed a five stack, much to Kenya's immense delight. She got three for herself before leading the way over to our table.

Hunt and Porter were there ahead of us. As we came over to them, Hunt was hunched low over the table in front of her. Her eggs stood forgotten next to her, though Porter had already finished his breakfast. Either he had gotten there long before her, or whatever Hunt was glaring at had distracted her completely.

"Should we be worried?" I asked Porter, as Kenya and I slipped into our usual seat. "How long has she been like that? Should we call a medic?"

"Whatever she's reading, it seems important," Porter said.
